President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed government’s commitment to completing the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) Multi-Purpose Laboratory Complex following an inspection visit to the university’s main campus at Sokode-Lokoe in Ho.
The visit formed part of the President’s tour of strategic national infrastructure projects aimed at expanding tertiary education facilities and strengthening Ghana’s research capacity.
President Mahama described the project as a critical national investment that will enhance health sciences education, scientific innovation and medical research.

UHAS Vice-Chancellor Highlights Importance of the Facility
Welcoming the President, the Vice-Chancellor of UHAS, Professor Lydia Aziato, described the laboratory complex as one of the largest and most advanced facilities of its kind in Africa.
She revealed that construction of the project began in 2014 and is currently about 72 percent complete.
According to Professor Aziato, the facility will accommodate approximately 1,200 students and staff and will include specialised laboratories for:
- Medical Imaging
- Molecular Biology
- Biochemistry
- Pharmacy
- Nutrition
- Prosthetics
- Anatomy
- Advanced Scientific Research
She explained that because of inadequate teaching space, sections of the unfinished building are already being used for lectures.

Growing Student Population Increases Infrastructure Demand
Professor Aziato disclosed that student enrolment at UHAS has grown significantly, increasing from only 154 students in 2012 to nearly 11,000 students today.
She indicated that although government has completed two 430-bed hostels for the university, accommodation remains inadequate.
Currently, the university can house only about 2,000 students on campus.
She therefore appealed for additional investments in:

- Lecture theatres
- Campus roads
- Completion of stalled infrastructure projects
Education Minister Announces Future GETFund Support
Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, assured the university that government has taken note of its infrastructure priorities.
He announced that new hostel facilities and an auditorium would be considered under the 2027 GETFund allocation.
The Minister also disclosed plans to establish an additional UHAS campus in the Keta-Anloga area, which will specialise in:
